How can nudging promote more sustainable consumption of mobile phones?

Copenhagen Economics has been commissioned by the Nordic Council of Ministers to investigate how behavioral economics, or 'nudging', can be used to promote more sustainable consumption of electronic goods in general, and of mobile phones in particular.

Nudging is defined as an aspect of the choice architecture (i.e. how a situation of choice is designed and how various options are presented) that changes people's behavior in a predictable way, without eliminating options or changing incentives. In the study, we will investigate how nudging previously has been used to reduce electronic goods consumption, and test how nudging can influence cell phone consumption among persons aged 18 to 25.

The goal of the project is to create knowledge of how behavioral economics can be used to reduce consumption of electronic goods in general and mobile phones in particular. The findings will be a base for designing new policy initiatives.
